AGC deploys IT solution to build state of the art convocation Hall for IIT Bombay. The solution has helped the institute hosting large scale events involving government officials and dignitaries.
IIT Bombay, one of the premier institutes of the country, was set up in 1958. In 1961, the Parliament decreed IITs as ‘Institutes of National Importance’. Since then, IIT Bombay has grown from strength to strength to emerge as one of the top technical universities in the world. IIT Bombay has a total of 14 academic departments, six centers, one school and three interdisciplinary programmes.
It is recognized worldwide as a leader in the field of engineering education and research. It is reputed for the quality of its faculty and the outstanding caliber of students graduating from its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Over the last fifty-three years, around 39,000 engineers and scientists have graduated from the institute. It is noted for its strong research groups in varied areas of science and technology that are making substantial contributions to national projects.
Educational programmes here extend beyond the physical sciences and engineering, into humanities and social sciences such as Economics, English, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology and management studies. Over the years, the institute has also created a niche for its innovative short-term courses through continuing education and distance education programmes. In 2011, a total of 1846 degrees, including 173 Ph.D were awarded. The faculty of the institute has won many prestigious awards and recognitions, including nine Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar awards.
The convocation hall in IIT, needed to be upgraded for the occasion of the 50th convocation ceremony. The advent of this event expedited the deadlines for the project. The hall consisted of several projects that worked in parallel in order to deliver a greater capacity auditorium for the convocation ceremony. Synchronization with all the teams to ensure smooth functioning and delivering a high end audio visual system was of top priority.
The project posed certain challenges in terms of installation. The tight deadlines posed by the project were further complicated due to the impending monsoons. The AGC team underwent several site visits to come to a conclusive solution that would prove to enhance the audio visual experience of the convocation hall. The solution comprised of wall/ceiling mounted projectors-7nos. along with respective projection screens, FOH repeater speakers, amplifiers, microphones and DSPs installed at different sections of the hall to cater the ideal AV output for a 1200 seater convention hall.
The complete AV facility is integrated onto a central control processor hence making the system very user friendly and accessible from any part of the hall on WIFI based touch panels.
Conduiting: AGC went beyond the role of a solution integrator and helped IIT in elevating the experience of the convocation hall. After a site visit, AGC advised the client to make changes in their conduiting. AGC’s consultation lead to changes which was beneficial to IIT as it helped in saving substantial cabling costs and enabled easier maintenance of the equipment.
Fabrication: During the course of the project, AGC team had to run through several revisions and changes owing to the dynamic environment and rigorous deadlines. Daily project progress updates were shared with all the concerned agencies and client to keep track as well as to proactively raise alarm/ alert of the concerns encountered during the course of the project. In spite of all the site related and design related challenges AGC synchronized with all the vendors/teams for deploying the Audio visual system to finally build the state-of-the-art Convocation Hall. This hall was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India on the occasion of the 50th year of convocation.
The convocation hall has evolved from being just a convocation hall to a hall that is frequently used for several other events. The hall now hosts IIT Bombay’s large scale events, involving government officials and dignitaries, ranging from the institute’s Foundation Day to hosting seminars organized by renowned global universities’ dignitaries. In the hall, they also organize events relating to recent technological advancements by leading professors from noted institutes across the world. Today IIT Bombay is proudly using this hall for activities like arranging expert lectures, conducting placement interviews, establishing collaborations with universities, etc.
