Today’s retail segment is embracing technology quite fervently and is no longer a traditional clothing or daily needs game, rules of the retailing segment have changed completely and this is a space where a lot of emphasis is being given to IT and technology implementation today.
India has a huge market for retail today. The country already has global IT retail majors such as Target, Tesco, JC Penny, Office Depot, Selfridges and of course Walmart. All these organizations are putting together a great retail landscape where IT and technology solutions play an important role in terms of defining and enhancing the customer needs and preferences.
As most of the IT requirements are being outsourced to third party service providers, value added resellers are becoming an integral part of this burgeoning segment where IT implementation are being taken quite seriously today.
It is important to note that, whether it is Reliance or Big bazaar, big retail giants were a bit skeptical about outsourcing IT applications and IT solutions, but today things have started towards global companies outsourcing their retail applications in a small way to Indian outsourcing service providers such as Wipro, TCS, Infosys and NIIT. Owing to better economies of scale, now, more of those IT applications and maintenance in the retail space will be offshored to TCS and NIIT in India.
And when it comes to Indian geography, today, retailers are fast changing their mindsets when it comes to using technology. So as a result, retail segment is emerging as a big buyer for surveillance equipment, tracking of packages is increasingly being done using RFID tags and technology is playing an important role in terms of putting the right pieces together.
However, while managing costs and improving operational efficiency will always be critical in the low margin retail enterprise segment, small or even big retailers are now shifting their core focus to solutions that enhance the basic customer experience and drive their revenue streams across all channels.
