Continued advancements in the information technology arena is prompting a lot of breakthroughs ahead and also in the process, innovating different ways to enhance efficiencies ahead. Amalgamation of GiS and agriculture is surely one big area of interest that systems integrators and solution providers should encash on.

In keeping with this technological trend, Governments around the globe are eager to draw maximum advantage from this phenomenon in order to deliver much more effective and efficient public services to the common people. Quite important to do the job smarter and cheaper are also being driven from increasing pressures on operational budgets within the government segment. As we all live in an advanced information age, we are accustomed to a different range of eservices and equally expect our governments to more than keep up with the considerable attractions associated with this.

Taking a cue from these thoughts, many government inspired initiatives have moved on to use Geographical Information Systems without fully understanding the basic concepts behind the same, if employed in an informed manner. This can largely be attributed to the relatively poor understanding of this critical component.

As far as GIS is concerned, a great number of significant attempts have and continue to be advanced to increase the profile and fundamental importance of developing a geographic information exchange which can be used for different segments such as Agriculture. These have helped improve a wider understanding of how such data can directly support a more co-ordinated and intuitive approach to cost effective delivery of public services.

Especially important for a country like India, Agriculture holds potential a huge opportunity and when combined with GiS information, it can truly become the biggest and most important application to rely upon. Taking help from GiS, governments can predict about the near term future of the crops and hence increase and enhance the productivity / profitability for the farmer community. All this is sure to increase the prosperity of the country as well. And here is where solution providers can easily come in to deploy and deliver the right GiS solutions for the agriculture segment and help the farmers reap in the big benefits.

However, to be able to achieve all this, much more emphasis needs to be placed on a fundamental re-design of roles and responsibilities of supporting data that can possibly feed the GiS systems and crease a national egovernance services based platform.
