Oracle launches Database 12c design for cloud

In a bid to introduce new advance technology for the Enterprise sector, Oracle India has announced the launch of Oracle Database 12c, the first database designed for cloud. The new oracle database 12c enables the end user to simplify their work and manage many databases as one without even changing their applications. In an exclusive chat with Sheshagiri Anegondi, Vice President, Technology, Oracle India, Bhawna Satsangi finds out how Oracle 12c works on the cloud and how beneficial it is for the enterprises.

After receiving the tremendous response from Oracle 11, Oracle India has created a wave with the availability of their new Oracle database 12c which is designed for the cloud. The 12c brings to end users a new multitenant architecture that simplifies the process of consolidating database on the cloud, enabling users to manage many databases as one- without having to change their applications.

“It is not a directory but is much more than a directory which has got lot of information which can actually run and is a pretty high application and is used by all the people almost every day. It is easy to use and not at all complicated. It is a next generation database designed to meet the needs, providing a new multitenant architecture on top of a fast, scalable, reliable and secure database platform. By plugging into the cloud with Oracle Database 12c, users can improve the quality and performance of application, save time with maximum availability architecture and storage management and simplify database consolidation by managing hundreds of databases as one,” explains Sheshagiri Anegondi, Vice President, Technology, Oracle India.

Another important fact that Sheshagiri highlights is that users who are using 10, 11 database, migration for them does not require much time or any code change. The minute the application is running on Oracle today either or 10 or 11, it means it is changed with 12c. Every single application can be on the cloud if it is running on 12c and is a great advantage for those who want to move onto the cloud.

Oracle Database 12c introduces 500 additional features and is the result of 2500 person-years of development and 1.2 million hours of testing, plus an extensive data program with Oracle’s customers and partners. The foundation of Oracle public cloud services, Oracle database 12c can greatly benefit the users deploying private database clouds and Software as a Service vendors looking for the power of Oracle Database in a secure multitenant model. Oracle multitenant works with all Oracle Database features, including real application clusters, partitioning, data guard, compression, automatic storage management, real application testing, transparent data encryption, database vault and more.

To help users efficiently manage more data, lower storage cost and improve database performance, the new Oracle database 12c has introduced new automatic data optimization features. The new feature balances and optimizes performance with maximum storage footprint reduction using the massive data compression uniquely available on Oracle storage systems with hybrid columnar compression.

Talking about the storage landscape shaping up in the era of Internet, Sheshagiri informs, “There’s lot of data going on internet everyday and the storage requirement are booming everywhere. With the internet people are clicking through portals of companies and companies are getting more and more data. The challenge that people are facing is that if you do not know how to manage storage then it will be an exponential growth for the company and they will be spending so much money on storage that they cannot withstand the kind of expenses they are doing. They will have to see that the storage cost should come down. How do you manage the cost is IT people always managing it and I think earlier it was not much as storage would grow 10 gigabyte or 1 terabyte or 2 terabyte in three years but now you are growing 50%-60% every year so that’s a dangerous situation here. That is where people have to define what kind of rule they should apply to storage benefit. Do they need to keep all the information those decisions they have to take. At the same time how old information, where should they keep, should they keep it on a tape, flash disk or on a data drive. Each company go through different ways of deciding what do they do. So an amazon or a retail e-commerce company will decide that a person who comes to my side everyday I will keep it in a one kind of storage. Somebody who is coming to my side once in a month, I will keep it in another kind of storage. So they will have to decide but internet is going to increase storage requirements and it is increasing.”

The 12c makes storage define easier as one can store the data in different formats and can use it as they require. 12 can defines rules as what type of things should be there and in which type of storage. It becomes easier so that’s the beauty of engineering storage. Talking about the difference of 12c storage on cloud from others Sheshagiri explains, “The idea about the cloud is what that you can have application of different organization on one server and provided to multiple company. That is the idea of cloud basically. The challenge with this is data. Data once start coming link, there is no privacy. You need to bring privacy. At an application level you had multitenancy available but the minute it went down to the database then it would combing. So all the companies’ data were together which was dangerous as there was no security base. Now with the 12c we are able to separate these two and still keep it on the cloud.”

Users can accelerate performance of Oracle Multitenant pluggable databases by using the fastest NAS database performance available from the Sun ZFS storage application. It has also introduces Oracle Intelligent Storage Protocol (OSIP), which will enable database to communicate directly with the Sun ZFA storage application and deliver a 65% reduction in administration and provisioning by dynamically tuning database performance. Oracle OSIP will allow select future Oracle storage product releases to highly optimize configurations, accelerating provisioning and auto tune storage systems for increased performance.
